The Iwo Jima campaign was near the end of all the World War II Pacific Island battles. Iwo Jima’s biggest cost was the devastating loss of so many combat veterans in taking the island. The raising of the flag at Mount Suribachi inspired the nation to continue to the end of WWII.
I read the words of an elderly veteran of the US 3rd Marine Division who was engaged in the heavy battle. He took his last moments before leaving the island to visit the Marine cemetery of his comrades. He kneeled to pray and say Goodbye and how he loved them and will forever be their brother. Loyalty to their comrades and the nation run deep from one of our greatest generations. Let’s take time to pause, remember and honor each one.
I am looking forward to attending the Iwo Jima 80th Anniversary Parade, Raising of the Flag Ceremony, and Flyover in Sacaton, Arizona this year.
