Widows May Be Eligible for
Benefits
Widows May Be Eligible For Monthly Payments
(Stars and Stripes) Widows of veterans who remarried
after their husbands' deaths but who are now single
may be eligible for VA compensation of at least $861
per month. Eligible widow(er)s must now be single, and
at some time in their lives have been widowed while
married to a uniformed service member or veteran who
died:
-
While on active duty in the armed
forces;
-
As a result of a service-connected
disability; or
-
Of non-service connected causes
after having been 100 percent service-connected
disabled for 10 or more years immediately preceding
death; or, if rated at 100 percent for a lesser
period, was so rated continuously for a period of
not less than five years from the date of discharge.
Almost 100 percent of all eligible surviving
spouses qualifying for the benefit are women. The widow's
subsequent marriage(s) must be terminated in order to
qualify. It does not matter how many times she remarried,
for how long, or why the remarriage(s) terminated. Nor
does it matter how much income or resources she now
has, or how old she is. It only matters that she is
now single.
The benefit - Dependency and Indemnity
Compensation (DIC) - is paid by the VA to all single
widowed spouses of uniformed service members who died
under the circumstances listed above.
Nationwide, there are 6,000 to 10,000
widows whose remarriages have terminated and who qualify
for the benefit but who are unaware of it. Those widows
have been eligible since Oct. 1, 1998 as a result of
the Veterans Benefit Act of 1998, which was signed into
law June 9, 1998.
To apply, the widow must contact her local
VA office, VA regional office or call the VA's toll-free
number: 1-800-827-1000.
