"To care for him who has has bourne the battle, his widow,  and his orphan"
~ President Abraham Lincoln

Gold Star Wives of America is a unique organization.  Its members are the surviving spouses of those who died while serving in the Armed Forces or as a result of a service connected illness or disability. The members are from all ranks, races, colors and creeds.

We are indebted to the small group of women led by Marie Jordan Speer who founded the organization in 1945 for the widows of those who died in World War II. Membership was soon expanded to include those who died from a service connected illness or disability.

From the beginning the organization has worked to make sure that the government will “care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan…” as stated by President Abraham Lincoln in his Second Inaugural Address on March 4, 1865.  It continues today to educate members of Congress and state legislators about the needs of the surviving spouses and children. Thank you to all who work hard in these endeavors.

Gold Star Wives is divided into eight regions headed by a Region President. Chapters and members-at-large comprise each region. Thank you to those who support GSW at the region, chapter and local levels. Members volunteer at VA Medical Centers and Clinics, Military Hospitals, and with local organizations. They participate in Memorial Day and Veterans Day events as well as other veterans and patriotic events.

Region conferences are held yearly in the early spring. The National Convention is held normally in July. Thank you to the Tahoma Chapter, hosts for the recent convention held in Seattle, WA. All the time and effort put into the planning made for a wonderful convention.

We are grateful for all the members who step up to become officers at the National, Region and Chapter level or be an elected or appointed member of the Board of Directors. Without them stepping forward and working, Gold Star Wives would not continue to thrive.

Our members suffered a great loss when our spouses died. I have learned over the years to be thankful for having the people, past and present, be in my life. Let us cherish the time we have and have had with those in our lives and be grateful for them being a part of our lives.

Harriet Boyden
President Gold Star Wives of America

"Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed- else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.”
